“Get down!” shouted Mia as a bright laser beam shot past her head.
Kai ducked behind a rock, eyes wide with excitement.
“They almost got us!” he panted, peeking over the edge.
Mia nodded, her heart pounding.
“Captain Velvet and his space pirates are tough,” she said, gripping her toy blaster.
“What do we do now?” asked Fern, crouching beside Mia.
“We need a plan,” Mia replied, looking around for ideas.
Mia, Kai, and Fern were best friends and loved playing in the park at the edge of their neighborhood.
Today, they’d found a new spot beside the woods, which looked just like a space jungle.
Last week, they’d read a book about space pirates, and now, they imagined themselves in an epic space battle.
“Remember when we read about Captain Velvet?” said Mia, smiling brightly.
“Of course,” answered Kai. “He’s the cleverest pirate in the galaxy.”
“And his ship, the Black Comet, is hidden near Planet X,” added Fern.
The friends had decided their mission was to rescue an important treasure stolen by Captain Velvet.
“We need to find the Black Comet,” said Mia, standing up. “It’s got to be around here somewhere.”
“Maybe it’s behind those big trees,” suggested Fern.
“I’ll check it out,” said Kai, creeping towards the trees.
Suddenly, he heard a rustling sound.
“Did you hear that?” he whispered, eyes wide.
Mia and Fern nodded, stepping closer together.
Just then, a figure jumped out from behind the tree.
“Ah-ha!” shouted a familiar voice.
It was their friend, Luke, dressed as Captain Velvet, wearing a shiny silver cape and a pirate hat.
“Prepare to be captured!” he declared.
“Never!” shouted Mia, raising her blaster.
“Let us go, Velvet!” demanded Kai, waving his stick like a sword.
Luke laughed heartily. “You’ll never escape the Black Comet,” he said with a grin.
Just then, more giggles came from behind the trees.
“Oh no!” gasped Fern. “He’s got a crew!”
Out stepped Sarah and Tom, dressed as space pirates.
“Surrender now!” shouted Sarah.
“We can take them!” said Mia, charging forward with Kai and Fern.
The three friends battled Luke, Sarah, and Tom with their toy blasters and sticks.
They ducked, dodged, and weaved through the space jungle, pretending to fire lasers and swing swords.
The battle was fierce and filled with laughter.
Finally, Mia, Kai, and Fern managed to circle around Captain Velvet, catching him in a pretend net.
“You win this time!” said Luke, pretending to be defeated.
“We did it!” cheered Mia.
“You were awesome,” said Kai, high-fiving Fern.
“Good game,” said Tom, shaking hands with Mia.
The friends all laughed and took a break under the big trees, exhausted but happy.
“We should do this again,” suggested Luke, still wearing his pirate hat.
“Definitely,” agreed Mia. “Next time, we’ll build a spaceship too.”
Their imaginations soared as they made plans for their next adventure in the space jungle.
